About the category

Minimum tillage, animal-drawn or mechanised

Conservation agriculture replaces full ploughing with minimum tillage: a ripper cuts a narrow, deep furrow and the crop is seeded directly into it. Less of the soil surface is disturbed on each pass.

Mealie Brand supports it with animal-drawn and walking-tractor equipment — from a ripper attachment for the familiar MB200 plough and a dedicated direct seeder, to ripper planters that rip, seed and fertilise in a single pass.

Farming activities supported

  • Minimum-tillage land preparation
  • Ripping
  • Direct seeding
  • One-pass ripping and planting

Equipment in the range

  • MB200 plough with ripper attachment
  • Animal-drawn direct seeder
  • Walking-tractor 2-tyne ripper
  • Single- and two-row ripper planters

Solution 01

The Magoye Ripper Plough

The perfect plough for conservation agriculture. It makes a narrow, deep furrow for minimum soil disturbance, and its tynes are angled for easy penetration and self-sharpening. The Magoye ripper tyne can be swapped for other ripper attachments of your choice.

Minimum-Tillage Land Preparation

Prepare only the planting line. The MB200 with ripper attachment is intended for conservation agriculture; for walking-tractor farms, the 2-tyne ripper breaks compacted soil and improves drainage and root penetration.

Equipment: MB200 Plough with Ripper Attachment, Two-Wheel Tractor Ripper

Ripping

Cut a narrow, deep furrow instead of inverting the soil. The MB200 ripper has reversible tynes with a 20–80 mm range and is drawn by 2 donkeys or 2 oxen.

Mealie Brand Direct Seeder
04

Direct Seeding

Seed straight into ripped or unploughed land. The animal-drawn Direct Seeder uses the Pitman drive and ships with 6 seed plates; the two-row planter is rated for no-tilled land.

Equipment: Direct Seeder, Two-Row Planter

Single-row ripper planter
05

Integrated Ripping and Planting

Rip, seed and fertilise in one pass. The two-row planter rips, places seed and fertiliser, then closes and presses the furrow; the single-row ripper planter is a lightweight 12–24 hp alternative.

Equipment: Two-Row Planter, Single-Row Ripper Planter

Basin Digger

Stop letting precious rainwater run off your land. In the face of El Niño and unpredictable rainfall, every drop counts. Instead of a long furrow where water can wash away topsoil, the ox-drawn Basin Digger creates precise, deep basins — water pockets that collect and hold rainwater exactly where the roots need it, stop runoff from carrying away fertile soil, and keep soil moisture higher for longer so crops survive between rains. Don't wait for the rain — be ready for it.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Answers based on Mealie Brand's published specifications.

Can I convert my MB200 plough for conservation agriculture?

Yes. The MB200 can be fitted with a ripper attachment, which is used for conservation agriculture and cuts a narrow, deep furrow with reversible tynes.

What is the difference between the Planter and the Direct Seeder?

Both are single-row Pitman-drive planters for maize, beans, soya beans and small grains, weighing 56.5 kg. The Planter works on ploughed land with 2 seed plates; the Direct Seeder is designed for conservation agriculture and comes with 6 seed plates.

Can I rip and plant in a single pass?

Yes, with a walking tractor. The two-row planter rips, places seed and fertiliser, and closes and presses the furrow; the single-row ripper planter is a lighter one-row option for 12–24 hp.

What draught power does the MB200 ripper need?

It is drawn by 2 donkeys or 2 oxen and weighs 27 kg.

Which crops can the single-row ripper planter plant?

Maize, soya beans and sugar beans, with fertiliser application adjustable to different cup sizes.
